Kapurthala woman vanishes during Pakistan pilgrimage

Kapurthala, November 16 — A Sikh woman from Punjab who travelled to Pakistan as part of a 10-day pilgrims’ jatha for Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prakash Gurpurab has gone missing, with unverified reports from across the border claiming she has embraced Islam and married a man in Sheikhupura.

Sarabjit Kaur, 52, a resident of Kapurthala, crossed the Wagah-Attari border on November 4 with 1,992 pilgrims under the bilateral shrine-visitation pact. When the jatha returned on November 13, she did not come back.

According to Pakistani media, she appeared before a magistrate in Sheikhupura and said she had converted to Islam, taken the name “Noor,” and married a man named Nasir Hussain — a relationship she insisted was voluntary. A purported video has also surfaced in which she is seen stating that she converted of her own free will and wishes to stay in Pakistan.

A purported Urdu nikahnama circulating on social media identifies her as “Noor Hussain” and states she married one Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura, around 56 km from Lahore, with a local mosque issuing the document. The Unmute has not independently verified its authenticity.

Police in Kapurthala confirmed that Kaur has three past criminal cases—two in Kapurthala and one in Bathinda—linked to cheating and fraud. Officials said details of her background, travel records and case history are being reviewed. Investigators also noted discrepancies in her documentation: her passport carries a Malout address and names her father instead of her husband, and she reportedly left parts of her immigration form blank upon entering Pakistan.

Before the trip, Kaur had been living in Amanipur, in the home of her husband Karnail Singh, who has lived in England for nearly three decades. She is divorced with two sons, both of whom face multiple criminal cases in Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi and Kabirpur and are currently out on bail.

Talwandi Chaudhrian SHO Nirmal Singh said she “went to pay obeisance at Nankana Sahib but did not return.” Villagers in Amanipur have remained silent amid the unfolding investigation.

Police are also probing reports that Kaur previously visited Kartarpur Sahib and had befriended a Pakistani man—identified in some accounts as Nasir—through Facebook. The Kapurthala police said no missing-person complaint was filed by her family and all reports regarding her alleged conversion and marriage are still being verified.
