Chandigarh, Nov 21: Chandigarh’s municipal corporation and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a segregated organic municipal solid waste–based compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Dadumajra under the design–build–finance–operate model. The MoU, signed at the MC office, aims to strengthen scientific waste processing, reduce landfill load and support clean energy generation.
Senior officials from both organisations were present, including MC commissioner Amit Kumar, joint commissioner Himanshu Gupta, chief engineer C.B. Ojha and medical officer of health Inderdeep Kaur, along with IOCL executive director Ajit Thakur, general manager Alok Kumar and manager Sachin Swami. The agreement was formalised by Ojha on behalf of the MC and Thakur for IOCL.
Under the partnership, the MC will provide 200 tonnes per day (TPD) of segregated organic waste and 30 TPD of cow dung, while IOCL will design, construct, finance and operate the plant. The corporation will also make 10 acres available at the Dadumajra dumping ground on a nominal lease. The project includes 33% green belt development, compliance with CPCB norms and acceptance of up to 10% mixed waste.
Officials said the facility is expected to enhance Chandigarh’s waste processing capacity, reduce emissions from the landfill and contribute to renewable energy generation.
