Chandigarh, Nov 24: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday declared the corridors of Sri Amritsar Sahib, Talwandi Sabo and Sri Anandpur Sahib as holy cities of the state, making the announcement during proceedings of the Vidhan Sabha. The move formally recognises three of Punjab’s most significant spiritual centres—each home to a Takht—as sacred cities under state designation.

Officials said the decision marks the first time these historic corridors, where Sikh religious and cultural heritage is concentrated, have been accorded an official “holy city” status. Mann told the House that the three locations, already central to Sikh faith and history, deserved formal recognition due to their unique spiritual standing in Punjab.

“These important cities of Punjab, with the presence of three Takhts, have now been officially given the status of holy cities,” the Chief Minister said while addressing legislators. The corridors of Sri Amritsar Sahib, Talwandi Sabo and Sri Anandpur Sahib are associated with key moments in Sikh history and draw lakhs of devotees every year.

The announcement was made as part of the Assembly’s ongoing session, where lawmakers were updated on the government’s cultural initiatives.
