Chandigarh, November 29, 2025: Even with 2,085 high-tech CCTV cameras monitoring intersections and light points across the city, traffic violations continue to surge, prompting police to issue 7.12 lakh challans between January 1 and November 5 this year. Officials said fines collected during this period stand at nearly ₹17 crore.

“This is still an improvement from last year, but the numbers show that enforcement alone is not enough,” a senior traffic police officer said. He noted that red-light violations and overspeeding remain the most frequent offences caught on camera.

Police data shows that more than 3.6 lakh of this year’s challans were issued for jumping red lights, while overspeeding accounted for over 79,000. Riding without a helmet led to more than 15,000 challans, and around 3,700 motorists were booked for drunk driving. Triple-riding remained comparatively low, but officers said it is still being recorded routinely. More than 2.7 lakh challans were issued for other violations, including wrong-side driving and obstructive parking.

The police also leaned heavily on citizen-sourced evidence. Posters and public submissions on social media generated about 40,000 challans. Complaints filed through Instagram, Facebook and X resulted in nearly 6,000 challans, while WhatsApp submissions alone prompted more than 34,000.

An official said the department plans to increase awareness alongside enforcement. “People know the cameras are there, yet violations continue. Behavioural change is the real challenge,” he said.
