JAMMU, Dec. 5 — Chaos gripped Jammu airport Friday as IndiGo cancelled all 11 scheduled flights, leaving passengers stranded and other airlines raising ticket prices sharply.
Ashwani Handa, 50, a government official, said he was unable to travel to Mumbai for an urgent meeting. “I’m still stuck in Jammu this afternoon. IndiGo has not set up any help desk. There’s no information on refunds or accommodation,” he said.
Following the cancellations, fares on other carriers soared. “They are charging ₹50,000 per passenger from Jammu to Mumbai,” Handa said. Normally, economy fares on the route range from ₹12,000 to ₹15,000.
Javid, a businessman headed to Delhi, said he had to return after waiting two hours in the cold. “All IndiGo flights had been cancelled. Some passengers stayed, hoping flights would resume later,” he added.
Jammu airport director Devendra Yadav said IndiGo notified its passengers and that four flights to Leh, Srinagar, and Delhi were operating normally via SpiceJet, Air India, and Air India Express. He claimed authorities were monitoring fares, denying reports of excessive spikes, and added that IndiGo arranged transport and accommodation for 50 stranded travelers.
Despite official claims, several passengers reported last-minute cancellations, long waits, and lack of timely updates. “I had to reschedule my plans because of this crisis,” said Deepak Gupta, a Delhi-bound passenger.
