Chandigarh, Dec 14: More than 21,500 cases were settled and disposed of during the National Lok Adalat held Saturday at the district courts complex in Sector 43, officials said.

A total of 21,526 cases, including pending disputes, pre-litigation matters and traffic challans, were resolved by 13 Lok Adalat benches, securing a cumulative settlement amount of ₹35.86 crore, according to court authorities.

Justice Deepak Sibal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who is also the executive chairman of the State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, visited the court complex and reviewed the functioning of the Lok Adalat.

“The objective of Lok Adalat is to provide speedy and amicable resolution of disputes through mutual settlement,” an official associated with the proceedings said.

Cases relating to civil disputes, compoundable criminal matters, motor accident claims, bank recoveries and traffic violations were taken up during the day-long exercise.

Lok Adalats are organised under the Legal Services Authorities Act to reduce the burden on courts and promote settlement through compromise.
