New Delhi, Jan 26: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared that a successful India is essential for a more stable and prosperous world during her visit as the chief guest for the 77th Republic Day celebrations. Speaking ahead of the upcoming India-EU summit, the President described the invitation to the national event as the greatest honor of her life. She noted that India remains a vital global partner for the European Union as both powers seek to deepen their strategic ties.
The partnership was visibly demonstrated during the Republic Day parade as European naval squadrons, specifically from the Atalanta and Aspides missions, marched for the first time. This inclusion served as a formal signal of joint cooperation regarding maritime security. The presence of high-ranking European leadership in New Delhi underscores the growing closeness between the two entities.
European Union Vice-President Kaja Kallas confirmed that the summit would lead to the signing of a historic security and defense partnership. This agreement is expected to yield practical outcomes in cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and maritime defense. “This partnership will bring concrete results,” Kallas mentioned, indicating a new era of cooperation.
Trade negotiations are also expected to take center stage during the bilateral talks. Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic noted that both sides are working toward the quick conclusion of an ambitious Free Trade Agreement. The European Union views India as a primary democratic pillar within the Indo-Pacific region. Officials believe the summit will serve as a milestone for achieving significant trade and investment targets by the conclusion of 2025.
