Patiala, Feb 3: Former Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia walked out of Nabha Jail on Tuesday afternoon, marking his return to the political fold after the Supreme Court granted him bail. Upon his exit, the Shiromani Akali Dal leader twirled his moustache in a show of confidence before being greeted by hundreds of party workers who had converged at the prison gates.
The release followed a day of procedural delays as legal teams worked inside the facility to process the court’s directives. Majithia’s exit was met with loud sloganeering from supporters, who eventually escorted him away in an open jeep. Sources close to the leader mentioned that he is expected to visit Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib to pay obeisance following his liberation.
The legal journey to this release involved navigating a 40,000-page chargesheet filed by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in August. The case, which alleges financial irregularities, stems from a 2021 investigation. Despite the gravity of the allegations, Majithia’s counsel, Damanbir Sobti, noted that the judiciary saw no reason to restrict his movement within the region.
“The court dismissed the request by the government to bar Majithia from entering Punjab,” Sobti said to the media. He added that the leader had already secured bail in a related matter under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, which had preceded the current assets case.
Heavy police reinforcements were deployed throughout the day to manage the assembly of Akali workers. The supporters had been camping outside the jail since Monday evening, ensuring a high-energy reception once the administrative hurdles were cleared.
