New Delhi, Feb 12: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faces a fresh challenge to his position in Parliament after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey moved a substantive motion on Thursday to terminate Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership. The proposal specifically requests that the Leader of the Opposition be prohibited from participating in electoral politics for life.
The notice claims that Gandhi has engaged with various international entities, including the Ford Foundation and the Soros Foundation, during visits to Southeast Asian nations. Dubey noted that these associations are central to the demand for Gandhi’s immediate removal from the House.
“No privilege motion notice. I have given a substantive motion notice,” Dubey told PTI. He further mentioned that the document outlines visits to Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand where Gandhi allegedly “colludes with anti-India forces” alongside groups like USAID.
A substantive motion serves as an independent proposal that allows the Assembly to take a definitive stand on a particular issue. In this instance, the BJP lawmaker is using the procedural tool to prompt a House decision on Gandhi’s eligibility to remain a representative.
The MP said that the evidence provided in his notice justifies the call for a lifetime ban on Gandhi’s political candidacy. He noted that the coordination with foreign-funded organizations during overseas trips represents a significant concern for the integrity of the legislative body.
