New Delhi, March 5: Delhi Akali chief Paramjit Singh Sarna has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene personally to ensure the safety of the Sikh community in Tehran as military strikes intensify in the Iranian capital.
The appeal comes as reports indicate that Sikh residences and the historic Bhai Ganga Singh Sabha Gurdwara are situated within high-risk zones currently facing the threat of aerial bombardments. Mr. Sarna asserted that the escalating conflict between regional powers has placed the small, longstanding community in a precarious position.
“The Sikh community in Tehran is small but longstanding. Their homes and the gurdwara are situated in neighbourhoods that could fall within high risk zones if the ongoing strikes and military exchanges escalate further,” Mr. Sarna declared.
The Akali leader noted that the Indian government should draw upon its previous experience with successful evacuation missions during global crises to protect its citizens. He maintained that the Prime Minister should engage with international authorities to facilitate a safe passage for Indian-origin residents until the regional volatility subsides.
“The Government of India should prepare to evacuate Indian origin residents, Sikhs included, from Tehran and nearby areas and bring them back to India until the situation stabilises,” Mr. Sarna affirmed.
Expressing the growing dread felt by families back in India, he stated that the safety of every Indian national abroad must remain a top priority for the administration. He added that the government must remain vigilant to ensure no Indian is caught in the crossfire of the rapidly expanding conflict.
