Jalandhar, March 20: The Punjab State Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a viral video purportedly showing a police officer assaulting a woman in Jalandhar’s Bhargava Camp. Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill issued a formal notice to the Jalandhar Police Commissioner on Friday, seeking an immediate and detailed report regarding the altercation. The Commission has further directed the concerned police officials to appear for a personal hearing on March 24 to explain the conduct captured in the footage.
The oversight body intervened after social media reports highlighted a heated argument where an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) allegedly used abusive language and physically pushed a female resident. Sources maintained that the dispute reportedly stemmed from a long-standing personal grudge or a misunderstanding during a local intervention. The Commission affirmed that no officer in uniform possesses the authority to bypass the law or compromise the dignity of any woman, regardless of the circumstances.
To ensure transparency, the Women’s Commission has demanded that the investigation be conducted by a high-ranking officer to eliminate any potential for local bias. The Chairperson stated that if the preliminary inquiry confirms the officer’s guilt during the March 24 hearing, the Commission will recommend the registration of a formal FIR alongside strict departmental proceedings. Gill asserted that the safety of the victim is a priority and the Commission will provide all necessary protection to ensure a fair legal process.
Local residents had staged a protest following the incident, prompting the swift administrative response. The Commission noted that the video evidence provides a prima facie case of professional misconduct. It affirmed that maintaining public trust in the police force is essential, and any act that demeans a citizen—especially a woman—will be met with rigorous accountability measures.
