Chandigarh, March 22: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has halted ongoing legal proceedings against singer Guru Randhawa involving allegations related to his song “Sirra.” Justice Surya Pratap Singh issued the stay after observing that a lower court in Samrala issued notices to the accused without first recording primary evidence as required by law.
The case will remain on hold until the next scheduled hearing on July 16. The underlying complaint suggests that the lyrics of the song defamed the Jat-Sikh community and showed disrespect toward certain religious rituals. Randhawa moved the High Court seeking to quash the orders issued by the magistrate’s court.
During the arguments, legal counsel for the singer, Tejeshwar Singh and Tarushi Monga, stated that the magistrate acted in violation of established rules. They asserted that the judicial process requires the recording of evidence before a notice is served to a defendant.
The defense team further maintained that the artist acted without any ulterior motives regarding the content of the track. They affirmed that the singer has already demonstrated good faith by committing to adjust the song on digital platforms.
“The magistrate issued the notice without recording evidence in violation of the rules,” the legal team declared during the session. After considering these points, the High Court determined that the trial court proceedings must be stayed until the matter is reviewed further this summer.
