New Delhi, April 8: India has formally welcomed the newly announced two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, characterizing the development as a crucial step toward restoring stability in West Asia. In an official statement released Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) asserted that the suspension of hostilities provides a vital window for diplomatic engagement to replace military confrontation.
The Indian government maintained that the conflict has already resulted in significant humanitarian distress and has created volatility within global trade networks. The MEA stated that dialogue remains the only viable mechanism for achieving a sustainable resolution to the regional tensions. A primary focus for New Delhi is the restoration of security in the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a lifeline for international energy shipments.
“India has consistently advocated for de-escalation, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict,” the Ministry of External Affairs affirmed. The department declared its expectation for the “unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce” through the strategic waterway during the truce period.
The ceasefire follows an announcement from U.S. President Donald Trump, who suspended a planned military campaign after reviewing a 10-point proposal from Tehran. Trump stated that the proposal, which was supported by diplomatic mediation from Pakistan, offers a “workable basis” for long-term peace negotiations. Indian officials noted that the reopening of maritime routes is essential to stabilizing energy markets that have faced extreme pressure in recent weeks.
