KAHRAMANMARAS, April 16 — The number of fatalities following Wednesday’s middle school shooting in southern Turkey has risen to 10 after a critically injured victim succumbed to their wounds early Thursday. The tragedy, which occurred in Kahramanmaras, involved a 14-year-old assailant identified as Isa Aras Mersinli, who opened fire in two separate classrooms, claiming the lives of eight 11-year-old students and a veteran teacher.

Law enforcement officials noted that the gunman, who was also killed during the incident, utilized five firearms and seven magazines belonging to his father, a retired police superintendent. The father has since been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities further revealed that the suspect’s digital profile featured an image of a perpetrator from a 2014 California mass shooting, suggesting a premeditated interest in similar acts of violence.

The shooting took place less than 24 hours after a separate attack in Sanliurfa province, where a former student wounded 16 people at a high school before taking his own life. In response to the unprecedented surge in school violence, the interior and education ministries held an emergency security summit in Ankara on Thursday. The meeting, attended by all 81 provincial governors and police chiefs, focused on immediate measures to enhance campus safety nationwide.

As the Ministry of Family and Social Services deployed teams to provide psychosocial support to grieving families, funerals were conducted Thursday afternoon for the young victims and 55-year-old mathematics teacher Ayla Kara. Government representatives affirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway to examine the root causes of these incidents and prevent further tragedies.
