Chandigarh, April 24: The Punjab government’s flagship Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) is significantly reducing response times in neurological emergencies by removing financial barriers to immediate treatment. Health officials stated Friday that the scheme, which covers more than 40 lakh beneficiaries, has become a vital safety net for families facing sudden medical crises like strokes and spinal trauma.

The program offers up to ₹10 lakh in cashless treatment at both government and private empanelled hospitals. Dr. Balbir Singh, Punjab Health Minister, affirmed the government’s resolve to ensure that no patient loses critical time due to a lack of funds. This policy has already seen practical success, such as a recent case in Hoshiarpur where a stroke patient received full coverage for a ₹32,300 procedure at AIIMS Bathinda.

Medical professionals at Rajindra Hospital noted that the cashless model allows for immediate surgical intervention while documentation is handled later. Dr. Harish Kumar stated that this approach ensures that the “golden hour” in emergency care is not wasted on financial arrangements. He maintained that this shift reflects a governance model that prioritizes survival over procedural delays.

Beyond financial relief, the initiative is driving a behavioral shift among the public. Neurosurgeons in Ludhiana affirmed that patients are now seeking help faster because the hesitation regarding hospital costs has been eliminated. Dr. Harman Sobti noted that earlier arrivals at hospitals are leading to improved recovery outcomes. The state remains committed to expanding this equitable healthcare framework across all districts.
