Chandigarh, May 4: Punjab’s tax revenue saw a significant boost in April 2026, with the state recording a combined increase of approximately ₹265 crore from Value Added Tax (VAT) and Punjab State Development Tax (PSDT). Finance, Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced the figures on Sunday, noting that the growth is the result of a transparent administration and stringent enforcement protocols.
VAT collections alone grew by 23.28 percent compared to the same period last year. This surge added roughly ₹230 crore to the state exchequer, a momentum the minister linked to sustained improvements in tax compliance.
“I am pleased to announce that our VAT collections have experienced a remarkable growth,” Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated. He affirmed that the consistent upward trajectory in these tax domains proves that the government’s policy priorities are yielding results.
The PSDT sector also performed strongly, witnessing a 20.43 percent increase. This growth contributed an additional ₹35 crore to the state’s finances. Minister Cheema maintained that these figures directly reflect improved monitoring and rigorous enforcement within the sector.
“This robust performance in VAT and PSDT underscores our government’s focused strategy of combining technology-driven enforcement with proactive taxpayer facilitation,” Minister Cheema asserted. He declared that while the government remains committed to a fair system for compliant taxpayers, strict actions against tax evasion will continue to safeguard state revenue.
