Kolkata, May 4: Early trends from the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election indicate a major political transformation as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged past the majority threshold on Monday. Data from the Election Commission shows the BJP leading in 154 seats, comfortably ahead of the 148-seat requirement in the 294-member house. The incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, is currently trailing with leads in 82 constituencies.

The shift marks a historic moment in the state’s political history, signaling a potential end to 15 years of TMC rule. Analysts noted that the saffron party has not only maintained its traditional strongholds but has also made significant gains in regions previously considered impenetrable fortresses for the ruling party. The Jungle Mahal region and various south Bengal districts have witnessed a notable swing toward the BJP as counting progresses.

“Counting trends suggest a decisive surge for the BJP,” a political observer stated while reviewing the early numbers. He affirmed that the party’s momentum appears to be converting into tangible electoral gains across diverse demographics. While the final results are still being tabulated, the current trajectory suggests a complete recalibration of political loyalties in the state.

The TMC is facing intense competition even in its safest seats, reflecting a broader churn among the electorate. Other parties, including the BGPM, are holding leads in a handful of seats, while the Congress has yet to register a presence in the early tallies. If these trends hold through the final rounds, the election will stand as a defining moment, reshaping the power equations and governance of West Bengal for the coming years.
