Chennai, May 5: The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has commenced formal outreach to secure a legislative majority in Tamil Nadu. With the state assembly’s halfway mark established at 118 seats, TVK is currently assembling a bloc that includes the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and Left parties to cross the required threshold.
A potential coalition is forming around a core group of 11 legislators, consisting of five from the Congress and two each from the VCK, CPI, and CPI(M). This alignment would provide the necessary support to stabilize the new administration. Sources stated that a proposed power-sharing agreement could involve allocating four to six cabinet positions to alliance partners, with the Congress likely receiving two ministerial berths.
VCK Chief Thol Thirumavalavan signaled a willingness to join the arrangement, noting the potential for a broader “secular front.” This shift suggests a significant departure for several parties currently aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. To further bolster the government, TVK is exploring additional support from the Indian Union Muslim League and factions of the PMK.
“TVK is expected to allocate four to six ministerial positions to partners,” a source familiar with the negotiations affirmed. This strategy aims to bring administrative balance to a legislative group primarily composed of first-time members. In a move to enhance the cabinet’s technical expertise, discussions are underway to field former IAS officer U Sagayam in a by-election for the Tiruchi East constituency. Following the formal election of Vijay as legislative leader, the Governor is expected to invite the party to demonstrate its majority on the floor within the coming week.
