CHANDIGARH, MAY 30 — Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann declared Friday that the Aam Aadmi Party’s decisive victory in the state’s municipal elections serves as a clear indication that the ruling party is positioned to exceed its historic 2022 assembly election performance in the upcoming 2027 polls.
Addressing a press conference following the declaration of results, Mann stated that the mandate represents a thorough public endorsement of the state’s development-driven governance model. He affirmed that the electorate has collectively rejected the politics of division and negativity put forth by opposition coalitions, including the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and the BJP.
“The people of Punjab have shown the door to communal forces and have given a resounding verdict in favour of secularism and the Aam Aadmi Party,” Mann stated. He noted that voters braved severe summer heat to participate in the local body elections, demonstrating a clear commitment to democratic processes and performance-based politics.
The Chief Minister presented statistical trends from recent electoral cycles to demonstrate the party’s expanding public support. He stated that the momentum spans across diverse regional territories, including the Doaba, Majha, and Malwa zones, where the administration’s welfare programs have found strong resonance.
“AAP won more than 11,000 panchayat seats out of nearly 13,000,” Mann noted, tracking the party’s trajectory over the last four years. “The by-elections to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, four Vidhan Sabha seats, Zila Parishads, Block Samitis, and now Nagar Councils and Nagar Panchayats have all demonstrated that public support for the AAP continues to grow.”
The election outcomes revealed significant challenges for traditional opposition groups in urban areas, which historically formed their core base. Mann asserted that the combined strength of the main opposition parties fell short of the total seats captured by AAP candidates, who secured over 90 percent of the municipal seats.
“The BJP could not save its deposits on more than 1,000 seats,” the Chief Minister stated, adding that the organization dropped to fifth position in the overall standings. He asserted that in multiple regional contests, independent candidates regularly outpaced central ruling party nominees, leaving them to compete primarily with the ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) ballot option.
Mann maintained that the local body mandate serves as a correction to those attempting to leverage central investigative agencies for political pressure against regional leaders. He concluded by assuring residents that the sweeping success would not alter the administration’s equitable approach to regional growth, affirming that every city, town, and village would receive equal development assistance without institutional discrimination.
