Chandigarh, June 13: Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced a comprehensive urban infrastructure initiative targeting seven peripheral towns surrounding the Tricity area. Following a progress assessment with municipal executive officers at Municipal Bhawan, the minister instituted a mandatory weekly evaluation protocol to monitor the completion of all local engineering works.

The development plan covers Municipal Councils in Kharar, Zirakpur, Derabassi, Nayagaon, Banur, Kurali, and Gharuan.

Mr. Bains noted that the ongoing operations include the construction of extensive roadway networks alongside targeted aesthetic improvements for primary transit corridors to elevate the regional urban landscape.

“Over 250 kilometres of roads are under construction across Kharar, Derabassi, Zirakpur, Nayagaon, Banur, Kurali and Gharuan,” Minister Bains stated, adding that the projects aim to improve connectivity for local residents.

The minister stated that the administration is addressing utility needs by installing 50 new tubewells across the designated urban centers to guarantee a consistent supply of clean drinking water. According to the departmental allocation, Kharar will receive 15 tubewells, Zirakpur and Nayagaon will each receive 10, Derabassi will receive five, Lalru four, Banur three, and Kurali one. Large-scale sewer cleaning operations are also underway to support regional public health and sanitation.

Departmental heads received instructions to begin operations on several high-priority road links within a two-week period. These specific projects include major thoroughfares such as Hospital Road in Kharar, Haibatpur Road in Derabassi, and the Ambala-Chandigarh Road link in Zirakpur, which are critical for local traffic management.

The minister stated that accountability measures will be strictly enforced, warning that administrative delays will result in disciplinary action. He maintained that the state policy focuses on durable, long-term engineering designs rather than short-term fixes, reflecting the administration’s structural framework for provincial modernization.
