Chandigarh/New Delhi, June 16: The Congress central leadership has initiated a crucial series of high-level meetings in Delhi to assess the structural health of its Punjab unit and address internal factionalism. Appointed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, three senior national observers have begun extensive, face-to-face discussions with state representatives to streamline administrative operations before the upcoming 2027 state assembly polls.
The panel, consisting of veteran leaders Ajay Maken, Meenakshi Natarajan, and Bhajan Lal Jatav, commenced the three-day exercise by collecting grassroots feedback from Punjab members of parliament. The consultations will progress in structured phases to include sitting legislators, former lawmakers, and district chiefs, culminating in a comprehensive strategy report for the central leadership.
Party administrators maintained that the timing of these interactions is intended to foster collective unity rather than enforce drastic penalties. Commenting on the purpose of the organizational review, a senior party official stated, “The central leadership wants to resolve all internal disputes, grievances, and organizational issues of the party in Punjab before the upcoming assembly elections at all costs.”
The state unit has seen prolonged debates regarding potential changes in leadership roles, which have kept regional political circles highly active. While previous updates from state-affairs in-charge Bhupesh Baghel suggested that the central command opposes immediate modifications at the absolute top, local representatives asserted that structural changes remain highly probable across intermediate tiers.
The three-day exercise has intensified regional political activities, with several factional leaders seeking to present their individual recommendations directly to the visiting panel. Party coordinators affirmed that a major final decision regarding the expansion of committees and state-level duties is expected to be finalized by June 19.
