Carcas, June 25: At least 164 citizens have lost their lives and 971 others have sustained injuries after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela in rapid succession. The government has indicated that the casualty numbers are expected to escalate as emergency teams work through the debris of collapsed infrastructure across the hardest-hit regions.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared that the devastation represents the most severe seismic disaster the nation has encountered in over a century. She maintained that the state is actively coordinating with international bodies, including the United Nations, to deploy additional rescue teams to the affected areas. Furthermore, plans have been announced to establish an initial $200 million reconstruction fund alongside appeals to the private sector for heavy machinery to assist recovery efforts.
The double disaster began shortly after 6:04 pm local time when a 7.2 magnitude quake struck near San Felipe in Yaracuy state. Barely 40 seconds later, a second and more powerful 7.5 magnitude tremor hit with its epicenter located near the town of Yumare. Seismology experts asserted that the unusually close timing made the event exceptionally destructive, as the first quake transferred stress to an adjacent fault segment, triggering a second release of energy roughly twice as strong as the first.
The impact was felt as far away as the Colombian capital of Bogotá, nearly 800 miles from Caracas. In Venezuela, the aftermath has left medical facilities completely overwhelmed, communications disrupted, and more than 30 subsequent aftershocks causing widespread panic among survivors.
Global leaders have quickly pledged their support to the nation during the crisis. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that Washington is immediately deploying rescue teams and humanitarian assistance at the direction of the administration.
Expressing solidarity, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. He declared that India stands deeply saddened by the devastation and is ready to extend all possible assistance to the government and people of Venezuela during this difficult time.
