Chandigarh, July 2: An early onset of the southwest monsoon has brought substantial relief from intense heatwave conditions across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, prompting a sharp drop in regional power demand. The Chandigarh-based Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert on Thursday forecasting continued heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and lightning across the territories over the next five days. The shift has altered the regional climate landscape, bringing early morning and late-night cooling to previously scorched urban areas.

The dramatic change in weather patterns caused a sharp reduction in electricity consumption across the northern plains as household cooling appliances were powered down. According to regional tracking reports, the city of Narnaul in Haryana recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 18.0 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Bathinda in Punjab which registered a low of 20.8 degrees Celsius.

“The widespread rainfall has effectively neutralized the seasonal heatwave, providing much-needed respite to the public,” a senior meteorological representative declared. The officer affirmed that institutional weather systems are predicting consistent precipitation levels until July 7, maintaining that municipal bodies must remain vigilant regarding potential localized waterlogging in low-lying zones.
