Pune, July 6: A family of three is feared trapped under heavy debris after a major landslide buried their home in Patan village within Maharashtra’s Pune district early Monday morning. The disaster struck during a period of relentless rainfall, prompting an immediate mobilization of disaster response teams to the remote region.
Emergency personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, alongside local police and community volunteers, are actively working at the site to clear the wreckage and reach the occupants.
“Due to heavy rain, three landslides occurred in a remote village in Maval,” declared Deputy Superintendent of Police (Lonavala division), Gajanan Tompe. “In one of the incidents, a house was buried under the debris. It is suspected that three people were inside the house when the landslide occurred in the early hours of Monday.”
The severe weather has triggered multiple emergencies across the Maval tehsil, forcing rescue teams to manage widespread flooding alongside the landslide sites. In a separate operation nearby, disaster response personnel successfully evacuated thirty-seven passengers who had become stranded on a private bus due to deep waterlogging near the Ghorawadi railway station.
The torrential downpour has also severely disrupted regional transit networks, though authorities are working to restore essential transport corridors. Officials managed to re-open a single lane on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to accommodate vehicle movement heading toward Pune, though extensive closures remain in effect.
“The carriageway from Pune to Mumbai remains shut for vehicular movement,” stated Superintendent of Police (Highway) Shivaji Pawar. “The old Pune-Mumbai Highway is also closed due to waterlogging at several stretches.”
