Chandigarh, August 18: A five-member delegation of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) met Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at his official residence in Chandigarh to discuss tensions following the recent clash between police personnel and protesters in Ambala. Committee leaders raised specific demands regarding legal proceedings and the release of detained community members.
“We have raised our concerns and expressed resentment over the recent incidents in Ambala,” HSGMC senior vice-president Gurmeet Singh stated following the meeting.
The delegation pressed the state government to take direct legal action against Gursimran Singh Mand, cancel registered cases against community members, and discharge arrested youths. An FIR stands registered against Mand and his son following the underlying dispute.
“The CM has assured that all efforts will be made to resolve the issue,” Gurmeet Singh stated, noting that dialogue with the administration remains ongoing despite a broader congregation call scheduled for August 25.
However, internal differences within the gurdwara body surfaced regarding the Chandigarh outreach. HSGMC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda stated that he was not informed about the meeting, maintaining that individual members met the executive independently.
“Some members of the committee met the CM at their own level,” Jhinda stated, asserting that decisions regarding future actions will be taken by the Sikh Sangat during the planned August 25 gathering if grievances remain unaddressed.
Meanwhile, family members of injured police personnel gathered in Ambala City demanding action against those involved in attacking security forces during the August 13 incident. Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat stated that medical care and institutional support are being extended to affected officers, adding that law enforcement remains open to peaceful dialogue while maintaining public order.
