Mumbai, 20 November 2024: Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, are separating after nearly three decades of marriage, their lawyer Vandana Shah confirmed on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on behalf of the couple, Shah described the decision as deeply painful but inevitable after enduring significant emotional strain. “Saira and her husband A R Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate. Despite their enduring love, the tensions and difficulties in their relationship have created an insurmountable gap that neither feels able to bridge at this time,” the statement read.

Rahman, 57, and Banu, who married in 1995, have three children—daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen.

The composer took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his feelings about the separation, writing, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”

On Instagram, their son Ameen requested privacy, saying, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”

The couple’s joint statement acknowledged the “pain and agony” behind their decision, urging the public to allow them space during this challenging period. Saira Banu initially announced the separation in a statement, which was later followed by a joint declaration.

Rahman and Banu’s separation has come as a surprise to many, given their long-standing marriage and public image of harmony.
