New Delhi, 29 January 2025: The Election Commission has directed AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal to provide evidence by 8 p.m. Wednesday to support his allegation that Haryana is poisoning the Yamuna river. The poll body reminded him of legal provisions that penalize statements harming national integration and public harmony with up to three years in prison.

In a letter to Kejriwal, the EC asked for details on the type and extent of chemicals allegedly used to poison the river, as he claimed it could lead to mass casualties. The commission also sought information on his assertion that Delhi Jal Board engineers detected and prevented the contamination.

Both the BJP and Congress had approached the EC over Kejriwal’s allegations. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi claimed that rising ammonia levels in Haryana’s water supply to Delhi could severely impact the capital’s water availability.

The EC is also awaiting a report from the Haryana government on the issue.
