AMRITSAR, FEBRUARY 24 –Even as groups of farmers in Punjab have been protesting for over a year for their demands, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, their meeting with the Union government on Saturday in Chandigarh remained inconclusive.
Union and State government representatives said the meeting was a held in ‘positive’ atmosphere in which elaborate discussions were held on MSP and the legal guarantee for it. Another round of meetings between the two sides will be held on March 19 in Chandigarh to continue the deliberations.
Farmers will now march to Delhi on March 25 instead of March 20, General Secretary of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee Sarwan Singh Pandher announced at a press conference in Amritsar.
The decision follows discussions between farmer leaders and central ministers in Chandigarh.
Pandher said farmers have submitted a 12-point memorandum to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, urging him to pass a resolution in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and forward it to the Centre. He called for the ongoing assembly session to address issues concerning farmers and laborers.
The farmer leader also raised concerns over youth deported from foreign countries, demanding action against agents responsible for their plight.
He further warned against any forced land acquisition by the government in districts like Bathinda, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran, vowing strong opposition to such moves.
With tensions escalating, the upcoming Delhi march is expected to intensify pressure on both state and central governments.
