CHANDIGARH, March 2 – Punjab Police intensified its anti-drug drive, “Yudh Nashian Virudh,” on Sunday, arresting 43 drug smugglers in a single day.
The statewide operation led to 510 raids, 27 FIRs, and the seizure of 776 grams of heroin, 14 kg of opium, ₹4.6 lakh in drug money, and other contraband.
The crackdown, launched on Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s directive to make Punjab drug-free within three months, has resulted in 333 arrests over two days. The operation, supervised by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, was carried out from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. across all 28 police districts.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said over 300 police teams, involving 2,000 personnel and 101 senior officers, checked 619 suspicious individuals. He stated that such operations will continue until the drug menace is eradicated.
In addition to enforcement, the Punjab government has adopted a three-pronged strategy—Enforcement, Deaddiction, and Prevention (EDP).
As part of the prevention efforts, police organized 510 awareness events, including seminars and public meetings, to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse.
A five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, is monitoring the anti-drug campaign, with district police chiefs instructed to ensure Punjab becomes drug-free.
