CHANDIGARH, May 20 — The Chandigarh Administration launched a new environmental initiative this week, establishing every Wednesday as a mandatory vehicle-free day for all government employees. The directive aims to reduce fuel consumption, alleviate local traffic congestion, and encourage sustainable commuting practices across administrative hubs.

To facilitate smooth transit for affected personnel, the transport department deployed dedicated bus services operating across 17 distinct routes connecting the tricity region. The specialized transit network serves employees stationed at major administrative centers, including the Union Territory Secretariat, the Punjab Civil Secretariat, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

“The transport arrangements are fully active to ensure that official duties face zero disruption while transitioning to eco-friendly commuting,” a senior administrative official asserted regarding the logistical rollout. The source maintained that the initial phase aims to establish a consistent pattern of carpooling, cycling, and public transit usage among institutional staff.

The policy follows recent operational directives issued by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, who called for structural measures to curb fuel dependency. Administrative records state that the weekly restriction applies strictly to personnel operating within the core administrative sectors, with transport coordinators monitoring vehicle counts at major institutional parking areas to evaluate compliance rates.
