Dhaka, 6 December 2024: Months after the removal of Sheikh Hasina from her role as prime minister, Bangladesh has initiated a significant change in its currency. The country is moving forward with the removal of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image—an iconic figure and Hasina’s father, widely regarded as the father of the nation—from its banknotes.
Bangladesh Bank is in the process of printing new currency notes that will feature imagery tied to the July uprising, the Dhaka Tribune reported on Thursday. The student-led protests, which led to Hasina fleeing to India on August 5, are now being reflected in the new notes. The uprising also saw Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus take the position of Chief Adviser at the helm of an interim government.
The new notes, according to the report, will exclude the image of “Bangabandhu” Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, they will showcase religious structures, Bengali cultural symbols, and graffiti created during the July protests.
“I hope the new notes could be released in the market within the next six months,” Husneara Shikha, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, stated.
The design proposal for the new notes, which was submitted by the Finance Ministry’s Finance Institute Division in September, outlines these changes.
