Haryana Intensifies Crackdown on Fraudulent Travel Agents

Chandigarh, December 6 – Haryana Police has unveiled a robust action plan to combat fraudulent travel agents exploiting individuals seeking opportunities abroad. Addressing the media, Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujit Kapoor shared a detailed report on the state’s efforts to curb illegal immigration.

In 2023, 750 cases of illegal immigration-related fraud were registered, while 578 cases were logged till October 2024. Highlighting the gravity of the issue, Kapoor disclosed that districts such as Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Kaithal, Yamunanagar, and Panipat reported the highest number of cases.

The past six years have seen the registration of 2,606 cases of travel fraud, with Karnal leading at 658 cases, followed by Kurukshetra (574), Ambala (457), Kaithal (256), Yamunanagar (217), and Panipat (106).

To streamline investigations, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted in April 2023, resulting in 1,014 arrests across 1,245 registered cases. Further, a helpline number, 8053003400, has been launched to expedite complaint resolutions, with DSP-rank officers designated as nodal officers in each district.

Legislative Measures

In a landmark step, the Haryana Vidhan Sabha has passed the Haryana Registration and Regulation of Travel Agencies Act-2024, complemented by corresponding rules. The legislation empowers authorities to seize properties of fraudulent travel agents, including homes and offices.

Public Advisory

Kapoor urged citizens to remain vigilant against dubious agents and verify credentials before engaging. A comprehensive list of authorized and unauthorized travel agents is now available on the Haryana Police website. Victims of fraud are encouraged to report incidents to their nearest police station or via the helpline.
