Canadian Court Blocks Khalistani Protesters

Toronto, 1 December 2024 – A Canadian court has issued prohibitory orders to prevent Khalistani protesters from interfering with consular services at the Laxmi Narayan Mandir in Toronto’s Scarborough. The interlocutory injunction bars protests within 100 meters of the temple from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on November 30, ensuring the safety of the premises and attendees, according to a temple statement.

The Laxmi Narayan Mandir Hindu Cultural Society expressed gratitude to the court for enabling the Indian consulate’s camp, which successfully provided consular services to nearly 250 elderly individuals on the temple grounds.

The Indian Consulate in Toronto highlighted that the camp, the final one for the season, issued life certificates to senior citizens. While no further camps are scheduled this season, services remain available at the consulate during working hours.

The injunction follows a recent surge in threats and attacks against Indian-origin communities in Canada. On November 2, a Khalistani mob stormed the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, disrupting a consular camp and attacking devotees. Local police were criticized for failing to protect attendees.

These incidents prompted the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India to suspend consular camps across Canada, citing security concerns. The MEA expressed hope for resuming services in other cities while emphasizing the need for adequate protection.

The recent court order underscores efforts to ensure the safety of Indian-origin communities amid rising tensions between Khalistani activists and consular representatives.
