New Delhi, 1 February 2025: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2025 today, allocating ₹1.28 lakh crore to the education sector, marking a 6.65% increase from the previous year.

This funding encompasses both the Department of School Education and Literacy and the Department of Higher Education.

In the previous budget, the education sector received ₹1.12 lakh crore, reflecting a 13% increase from the year before.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims for a 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by 2030. Currently, GER is near-universal at the primary level (93%), with ongoing efforts to bridge gaps at the secondary (77.4%) and higher secondary levels (56.2%).

Experts have noted that, as per previous trends, all developed countries have diverted a large fund towards public education systems.

Moreover, efforts should be made to train the youth of the country for creating a strong and skilled workforce.

The increased allocation underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and quality across India.
