Farmers Hold Back Funeral, Demand Compensation

Bathinda, 8 January 2025: Farmers refused to conduct the funerals of three women killed in a January 4 accident en route to a “kisan mahapanchayat” in Tohana, Haryana. They vowed the last rites would proceed only after the government compensates the bereaved families.

Protests entered their second day near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where farmers staged a sit-in and organized a march to the local bus stand. The deceased, all members of the BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan), were mourned as protesters raised slogans against the administration.

Shingara Singh Mann, district president of BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan), accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government of neglecting their demands. “This government once said no one would need to fight for their rights, yet today we’re staging prolonged protests even for small demands,” Mann said.

Farmers are demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation, debt waivers, and government jobs for the families of the deceased. An additional Rs 5 lakh for each injured victim was also requested.

Concerns were raised over the health of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, another key figure in the farmers’ movement. Speakers appealed to the central government to address their broader grievances promptly.
