Ambala, July 1: A twenty-one-hour rescue operation to save a four-year-old child trapped inside a deep borewell in Dhaneora village of Ambala district ended in absolute heartbreak early this morning. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, the Indian Army, and the district administration worked through the night under challenging conditions, but the boy was found unresponsive when teams finally reached him.
The young child, Nirvair Singh, was pulled out from the two-hundred-and-twenty-foot-deep shaft at approximately 3.40 am and immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment. Medical Officer Dr. Rishipal Singh stated that a preliminary examination was conducted at the scene as soon as the child was retrieved. Dr. Singh affirmed that finding no signs of life, the boy was brought to the hospital, where necessary tests were performed, adding that he had already passed away. The exact cause and time of death will be known once a postmortem report is received.
The accident took place on Tuesday morning around 6.30 am when the nursery student accompanied his father, Manjit Singh, to the fields to deliver food to his grandfather. While the adults began working, the child wandered off to play, noticed an open borewell, and began throwing soil into it. The wet earth around the opening gave way as he leaned over, causing him to slip into the narrow shaft.
Family members rushed to the spot after hearing a loud sound and initially tried to reach him on their own before alerting the authorities at 7.30 am. Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar declared that the rescue teams did everything possible to bring the child out alive, though continuous rainfall in the area severely disrupted the pace of the operation. Tomar urged farmers across the region not to leave borewells uncovered, maintaining that the entire tragedy could have been prevented had the borewell been properly sealed.
