New Delhi, May 3: A massive fire claimed the lives of nine people in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar Phase-I during the early hours of Sunday. The blaze, which broke out at building B-13, was reported to the Vivek Vihar police station at 3:48 a.m., prompting an immediate mobilization of emergency services, including the local SHO and ACP.

Twelve fire tenders and teams from the Delhi Fire Service and Disaster Management worked to contain the flames that had rapidly engulfed the second, third, and fourth floors. Authorities noted that the fire likely started among domestic articles before spreading across six separate apartments. During the intense rescue operation, between 12 and 15 residents were successfully evacuated, while two individuals with minor injuries were transported to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

The recovery of the deceased revealed the grim path of the fire. Officials stated that one victim was found on the first floor and five others on the second floor. Three more bodies were recovered from a locked staircase mumty, where victims appeared to have been trapped while attempting to escape.

“The fire is suspected to have originated from domestic articles and spread to six flats in the building,” a fire department official affirmed. Police personnel declared that search and rescue teams are continuing to comb through the structure to ensure no other victims remain inside and to secure any evidence related to the cause of the disaster.
