CHANDIGARH, May 1 — The Punjab Police have significantly strengthened the state’s internal security by establishing a sophisticated “second line of defense” designed to intercept cross-border smuggling and organized crime. Authorities stated Thursday that the initiative, part of the “Gangstran Te Vaar” campaign, focuses on dismantling the logistics of criminal networks through a dense network of 2,291 CCTV cameras installed at 585 critical border points.

Law enforcement officials maintained that while the Border Security Force manages the international boundary, the Punjab Police are responsible for ensuring that any contraband breaching the perimeter is swiftly neutralized. As part of this infrastructure upgrade, 41 police stations in border districts have been equipped with comprehensive CCTV coverage to monitor transit routes and vulnerable villages.

“The second line of defense is where the chain is effectively broken,” asserted Suhail Qasim Mir, SSP of Amritsar Rural. He stated that the current strategy has transformed routine checkpoints into intelligence-led operations that rely on verified data rather than random inspections. Mir affirmed that the integration of village-level defense committees into the security framework has further enhanced ground-level monitoring.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stated that the primary objective is to dismantle the entire criminal ecosystem, from initial supply to final delivery. He maintained that building depth in policing ensures that attempts to move narcotics or weapons are detected early. Yadav affirmed that the strategy aims to suffocate the networks that sustain remote-operating gangsters.

The shift in tactics marks a move away from reactive policing toward a preemptive disruption of logistics. Officials stated that by treating border villages as active partners, the police have gained access to local intelligence that strengthens the responsiveness of the surveillance grid. They affirmed that the focus has moved from identifying the individuals who commit crimes to stopping the weapons and drugs before they reach their destination.
