SC to Hear Petition on Shambhu Border Blockade Today

New Delhi, 9 December 2024: The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition today seeking the reopening of the Shambhu border, a key route between Punjab and Haryana, which has remained closed due to ongoing farmers’ protests.

The blockade stems from farmers’ plans to march to Delhi to press their demands before the central government, also resulting in closures of other major highways in Punjab.

The petitioner argued that the prolonged road closures infringe on citizens’ fundamental right to freedom of movement guaranteed under the Constitution.

Citing the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Act, the plea alleged that blocking roads is illegal and criticized the inaction of law enforcement and highway authorities.

The petitioner urged the Supreme Court to order both central and state governments to ensure all routes are reopened.

In an earlier case on September 2, the Supreme Court formed a five-member high-powered committee led by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Nawab Singh. The committee was tasked with negotiating with farmers on key issues such as minimum support prices.

The court also advised farmers to avoid politicizing their movement and making unreasonable demands.

The blockade at the Shambhu border has now lasted over 300 days, affecting transportation and daily life across the region.
