His remarks came during the discussion on the Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at implementing the “One Nation, One Election” policy, which was passed by the House.
Lok Sabha today approved the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement the “One Nation, One Election” policy, aiming to synchronize Lok Sabha and Assembly elections across the country.
During the discussion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accentuated the implication of India’s democratic system and Constitution in fostering economic and political strength.
He noted that despite challenges, India has emerged as the world’s fifth-largest economy, attributing this success to the resilience of its people and constitutional framework.
In a pointed critique of the Congress, Shah said the party made 77 constitutional amendments in 55 years, asserting that India’s Constitution is not a mere replica of global constitutions. Citing India’s traditions and values, Shah stated, “Our Constitution reflects Indianness, even if influenced by foreign ideas.”
Shah also credited Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for his role in uniting the country, underlining that Patel’s efforts laid the foundation for India’s current strength and unity.
The bill, seen as a landmark move to streamline the electoral process, now moves to the Rajya Sabha for further consideration.
