Kolkata, June 26: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Friday that the state government plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code, mirroring the legal frameworks established in Uttarakhand, Assam, and Gujarat. The legislative process is scheduled to be formally initiated in the state Assembly early next week.
The Chief Minister stated that a structured administrative procedure will be introduced to facilitate the transition. A specialized panel led by a retired judge will be formed to oversee the formulation of the policy before the detailed framework is officially presented to the legislature.
The announcement was made during a media briefing where the administration outlined its upcoming legislative agenda. “There is a prescribed procedure for it and I will explain it in the Assembly. A committee will be constituted under the leadership of a retired judge. Following the same procedure adopted in Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Assam, the process will be carried out. I will provide further details in the Assembly on Monday,” the Chief Minister declared.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress expressed strong opposition to the proposed legislative move, characterizing the initiative as part of a specific political agenda. The introduction of the uniform code reflects governance commitments outlined during recent electoral campaigns, where central leadership had promised to establish uniform civil regulations across the state.
