Kharar, 20 January 2025: Thirteen men, including three identified individuals from Haryana, have been booked in connection with the January 9 assault on two computer science students in their rented flat in Kharar, Punjab.
The complainant, Ankur Tyagi, a Haryana native, informed police that the attackers forcibly entered their flat in Bhago Majra at around 2:30 a.m. armed with sticks and a pistol.
“We were asleep when they broke in. They attacked us and threatened to kill us. When we raised an alarm, they fled,” Tyagi recounted, adding that he sustained fractures in both arms while his brother, Amul Tyagi, suffered injuries.
Police named three suspects—Sanjit Kharab, Diren Kharab, and Monu, all Haryana residents—alongside 10 unidentified individuals. Initially, both sides reportedly considered a compromise, but an official complaint filed by the victims led to formal action, officials said.
Sources familiar with the case revealed a potential motive: one of the accused allegedly harassed a female relative of the victims, whom he knew from school.
Police stated that the incident escalated after the victims warned him to stay away, triggering a violent confrontation.
The accused, now absconding, have been charged under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those pertaining to house trespass, criminal intimidation, unlawful assembly, and voluntarily causing hurt. Investigations are ongoing, authorities confirmed.
