Lahaul, April 11 — The Shinku La pass on the Darcha–Padum road has been reopened for tourists, the Lahaul and Spiti district administration announced Thursday. The route was restored by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on April 8, reconnecting Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul valley with the Zanskar valley in Ladakh.
Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar confirmed that tourist movement is now permitted under regulated conditions due to unpredictable weather. “Traffic on the Darcha–Shinku La–Padum road will be allowed on alternate days,” he said. Vehicles from Lahaul to Zanskar are permitted on Thursdays, while Zanskar to Lahaul travel is allowed on Fridays, within the fixed window of 9 am to 1 pm.
Due to snow-bound conditions, only 4×4 vehicles or those fitted with snow chains will be allowed to use the route. The administration has advised all tourists to strictly follow safety guidelines and weather advisories.
Simultaneously, tourists have been granted partial access on the Manali–Leh highway up to Deepak Taal, beyond Darcha. Movement on this stretch will be allowed daily between 9 am and 2 pm, depending on weather conditions. The Baralacha La section remains closed as BRO teams continue restoration work.
The Manali–Koksar road has also reopened up to Kutbihal, improving access to scenic locations in the region.
With the reopening of these high-altitude passes, tourism officials expect a sharp rise in visitor numbers to Lahaul. “There is snow in abundance, making it a perfect time for winter activities,” the DC noted, urging travellers to remain cautious and informed during their journeys.
