Murshidabad, April 13: Twelve more people were arrested in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Sunday in connection with violent protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, taking the total number of arrests to 150, police said.
The situation in Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj, and Jangipur remained peaceful, with no fresh incidents of violence reported. Security forces continued area patrols and road checks, while raids were carried out overnight.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remain in place in violence-hit areas, and internet services are suspended across the district.
Three deaths have been linked to the unrest so far. Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan Das were found murdered with multiple stab wounds in Jafrabad, Samserganj, on Saturday. Separately, Ijaz Momin, 21, died from bullet injuries sustained during clashes at Sajur More in Suti on Friday.
At least 18 policemen were injured during Friday’s violence, which saw police vans torched, roads blocked, and stone-pelting incidents across several parts of Murshidabad.
DGP Rajeev Kumar visited Samserganj on Saturday night to assess the situation and hold a review meeting with senior officers. An investigation into the violence is ongoing, and officials said more arrests are expected.
