Pahalgam Attack: Cabinet Security Meeting Underway

New Delhi, April 23 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting at his residence a day after four LeT terrorists killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam. A major and calibrated response, both military and diplomatic, is expected to be finalized during the meeting.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who spoke to the media earlier, raised India’s resolve to respond firmly to the Pahalgam attack. “India will give a befitting response to this cowardly act in the near future,” Singh stated, reinforcing the government’s stance on security.

The meeting comes after the deadly attack, echoing the response following the Pulwama terror strike in 2019, when India recalled its ambassador from Pakistan, while Pakistan reciprocated by sending back India’s high commissioner. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have remained tense since then, with India maintaining a deputy high commissioner in Islamabad.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who recently returned from Srinagar, is attending the meeting alongside Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Sitharaman is returning after cutting short her visit to the US and Peru.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, along with the service chiefs and Chief of Defence Staff, is also expected to participate in the high-level security discussions. The CCS is expected to formulate a strategy aimed at both counterterrorism and diplomatic measures in response to the Pahalgam attack.
