New Delhi, May 5: In a show of solidarity following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and extended full support to India in its fight against terrorism.

According to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Putin “strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam” and expressed “deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives.”

He also stressed that those responsible—along with their supporters—must be held accountable. “The perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice,” Jaiswal quoted Putin as saying in a post on X.

The leaders used the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the India-Russia special and privileged strategic partnership.

Prime Minister Modi also conveyed greetings to Putin on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day (May 9) and extended an invitation for the annual India-Russia summit to be held later this year.

The high-level engagement came just days after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed the incident with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

On May 2, Jaishankar said in a social media post, “Its perpetrators, backers and planners must be brought to justice,” referring to the Pahalgam attack.

The Russian Embassy in New Delhi also released a statement confirming the call between Lavrov and Jaishankar, noting that they “discussed the aggravation of Indian-Pakistani relations following the terrorist attack near Pahalgam.”

The strong diplomatic messaging underscores India and Russia’s shared stance on counterterrorism and their ongoing cooperation amid heightened regional tensions.
