May 24, Ro-Ko Retirement: Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir has admitted that the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be a challenge for the team, but the retirement of these two players from Tests has opened the door for others. Kohli and Rohit said goodbye to the red ball format for a weekend this month. Both of them took this decision when India is scheduled to visit England for a five-match Test series next month.
It is believed that the team for England tour will be announced in Mumbai on Saturday. Gambhir said, I think it is one’s personal decision whether to start a career and to finish it. No one has the right to interfere in this, whether it is a coach or a selector or no one in the country has the right to tell a player when to retire and not to retire.
Other people will get opportunities
With the retirement of Rohit, now India is looking for a new Test captain. Also, the team will not have two experienced batsmen and Gambhir has also admitted that it will not be easy to fill this gap. Yes, we will be without two senior players who have a lot of experience and at times I feel it is an opportunity for others who want to take the responsibility,” Gambhir said. Yes, the tour will be tough, but there are many who can take on the responsibility. A similar question was asked to me before the Champions Trophy.
Gambhir said, when Bumrah was not in the Champions Trophy and even then I said the same thing that a player’s exit can open up opportunities for another player who wants to do something special for his country. Hopefully, there will be many other players who are waiting for the opportunity.
What did Gambhir say about playing Rohit-Kohli in ODI World Cup?
Kohli and Rohit have retired from Test and T20 internationals, but will continue to play for India in ODIs. When asked whether Rohit and Kohli will be able to make it to the team for the 2027 ODI World Cup? On this the coach said, Look, there is still a lot of time. Before the ODI World Cup we have the challenge of the T20 World Cup and it will be a big tournament which is to be held in February-March in India. At the moment, our focus is on this and after the England tour, the focus will be on the T20 World Cup. November-December 2027 is still two and a half years late. Most importantly, I have always said that if you are performing, age is just a number.
