Kapurthala, June 17 – A violent clash between two Nihang factions at Pipli Saheb Gurdwara on Tuesday evening left four people injured, including one man who accidentally shot himself during the confrontation. The dispute, according to police, stemmed from ongoing personal tensions between a local Nihang and the gurdwara management committee.
The altercation erupted around 5:15 pm when nearly two dozen Nihangs from Garhshankar in Hoshiarpur district, led by Baba Malkit Singh of Budha Dal and Baba Fateh Singh of Tarna Dal, arrived at the gurdwara to mediate the simmering dispute involving Ranjit Singh, a taxi driver from Hardaspur, and Jathedar Jatinder Singh, the Pipli Saheb gurdwara pradhan.
Tensions flared during the discussion, turning into a heated exchange. Amid the chaos, Ranjit Singh’s son, Jaspreet Singh, reportedly tried to open fire but ended up shooting himself in the thigh. He was first taken to Civil Hospital Phagwara and later referred to Johal Hospital in Jalandhar for further treatment.
During the scuffle that followed, three others — Ranjit Singh Jittu, Malkit Singh, and Dharamveer Singh — suffered knife wounds. All three are currently being treated at the Phagwara civil hospital.
Following the violence, members of both factions gathered outside the hospital, prompting the swift arrival of local police to prevent further escalation. Authorities confirmed that the situation is now under control.
“A personal feud appears to have triggered the violence. We’ve deployed personnel to ensure peace in the area,” a police official at the scene said.
No fresh disturbances have been reported as of Tuesday night, though investigations are underway to determine the exact sequence of events and to examine whether any weapons laws were violated during the confrontation.
