BATALA, June 27— A brazen gangland killing was caught on CCTV as two motorcycle-borne assailants shot dead the mother and cousin of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria in Punjab’s Batala late Thursday night.
Harjit Kaur, a former sarpanch and mother of Bhagwanpuria, along with her nephew Karanveer Singh, was attacked moments after they sat inside their SUV outside their home along the Batala-Qadian Road. The attackers fired nearly 15 rounds before fleeing the scene.
The gruesome assault, captured by nearby surveillance cameras, took place in one of the city’s busiest areas. Video footage quickly went viral, and by Friday morning, a social media post surfaced in which the Davinder Bambiha gang claimed responsibility, citing revenge for the killing of Gurpreet Singh alias Gora Bariyar in May—allegedly by Bhagwanpuria’s men.
Bystanders rushed both victims to the Civil Hospital. Karanveer succumbed to his injuries on the way, while Harjit Kaur, who was referred to a hospital in Amritsar, also died en route.
Senior Superintendent of Police Suhail Qasim Mir confirmed a fresh FIR had been registered at Civil Lines police station. “We have formed several teams and worked overnight. We have some promising leads and expect to apprehend the accused soon,” he said.
Police sources said the targeted property has long been under scrutiny for its links to organised crime, including international drug traffickers. The raid site is also allegedly tied to a ₹540 crore drug case.
Authorities are probing whether Karanveer was the primary target, with Harjit Kaur being killed in the crossfire. CCTV footage from several locations has been collected, and a search operation is underway in suspected hideouts.
Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, born Jagdeep Singh, is one of Punjab’s most notorious gangsters, known for running an extortion and contract killing network even while behind bars. The retaliation from the rival Bambiha gang has once again spotlighted the deep-rooted gang rivalries haunting the state.
