Patna, July 17: In a chilling daylight murder that has shaken public confidence in Bihar’s law enforcement, five armed men entered Patna’s Paras Hospital on Thursday morning and shot dead gangster Chandan Mishra, who was admitted under parole.
The audacious attack, captured on CCTV cameras, saw the assailants walk into the hospital, make their way to Mishra’s intensive care unit, open fire, and exit the premises within minutes. Mishra, a resident of Buxar district and an accused in several murder cases, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds while undergoing treatment.
“This appears to be a targeted killing by a rival gang—possibly the Chandan Sheru gang,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikay Sharma. “We are working closely with Buxar police to identify and trace the attackers.”
Police have not ruled out internal assistance and are probing the possible involvement of hospital staff or security personnel.
The murder has sparked widespread outrage and renewed criticism of the state government’s handling of law and order. In recent weeks, Patna has witnessed a spate of high-profile killings, including those of businessman Gopal Khemka, BJP leader Surendra Kewat, and advocate Jitendra Mahato.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav slammed the government, saying, “Gunmen walked into an ICU and shot a patient. Is anyone safe anywhere in Bihar today? Such a situation didn’t exist even before 2005.”
Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha termed the incident “deeply unfortunate” and promised swift and decisive action.
The brazenness of the hospital shooting—executed in a secure facility during daytime—has heightened fears of gang violence and exposed glaring gaps in public safety protocols.
